Of anything that God could want from me, it is my heart. Proverbs 23:26 says “My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways”. My heart refers to the inner me – my mind, will, and emotions – it is what produces my thoughts, words, and actions. That is what God wants – all of me yielded and submissive to His Word. When I do that, God is glorified. John 15:8 says “Herein is my Father glorified, that ye bear much fruit, so shall ye be my disciples”. Ephesians 1:12 says “That we should be to the praise of His glory, who first trusted in Christ”. So, willingly, consistently choosing to give my heart to the Lord is the best way to live my life.
Micah 6:8 is one verse that gives us direction on how to do just that – “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
- Do justly – do what is right according to the Bible towards God and people. Am I kind, considerate, and helpful? [Romans 12:10]. Am I respectful and obedient to my authorities? [Hebrews 13:24]. Am I honest in all my dealings? [Romans 12:17]. Am I thankful? [Ephesians 5:20].
- Love mercy – forgiving attitude, not “get even.” Am I vengeful? [Romans 12:17]. Am I forgiving? [Ephesians 4:32]. Remember the words of Christ as He hung on the cross [Luke 23:34 – “Father forgive them; for they know not what they do.”]
- Walk humbly – not prideful, boastful of self. Do I talk about my accomplishment all the time? God says to let others do that [Proverbs 27:2]. Do I praise the Lord for anything good I do – not taking credit for self? [Romans 12:3 – It is our great God that gives us our abilities]. Do I look out for others over self? [Philippians 2: 3-5].
It is an honor and privilege to give our hearts to our Great Lord Jesus!
