The provident hand of God in the founding of our great country is undeniable. One of the best examples of that providence is in the life of George Washington. During one of the battles of the French and Indian War (1754-1763), Washington and the British army were ambushed by the French. Every officer on horseback was killed except Washington. He later wrote a letter to his brother saying:
“But by the all-powerful dispensations of Providence, I have been protected beyond all human probability or expectation; for I had four bullets through my coat, and two horses shot under me, yet escaped unhurt, although death was leveling my companions on every side of me.”
The result of that incident caused Washington’s faith in God to grow deeper and stronger. God mightily protected him numerous other times, allowing him to became the general and military leader of The War for Independence. George Washington later became our first president, saying this at his Inaugural Address:
“No people can be bound to acknowledge and adore the Invisible Hand which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States. Every step by which they have advanced to the character of an independent nation seems to have been distinguished by some token of providential agency… We ought to be no less persuaded that the propitious smiles of Heaven can never be expected on a nation that disregards the eternal rules of order and right which Heaven itself has ordained.”
Most of our senators, congressman, and judges have forgotten what Washington said, and seemingly dismiss and disregard the providence of God in our rich history. Divine providence, or the provident hand of God is best defined as “the governance of God by which He, with wisdom and love, cares for and directs all things in the universe. The doctrine of divine providence asserts that God is in complete control of all things. He is sovereign over the universe as a whole.” The provident hand of God is clearly written in our history. However, many are doing everything possible to erase that history, and to eradicate God’s provident work in the lives of all people. God is sovereign, he is in control, and “In God We Trust.” It is the provident hand of God that started this nation, it is the provident hand of God that has sustained this nation, and it is the provident hand of God that will safely guide us through the future. It is up to us Christians to fast and pray, asking God for one more miracle in restoring America to its Godly heritage. We must also pray for God’s will in this upcoming election, as it will surely set the standard for the future.
“The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all” (Psalms 103:19).
“And He changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding: He revealeth the deep and secret things: he knoweth what is in the darkness, and the light dwelleth with him” (Daniel 2:21-22).
“The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much” (James 5:16).
