Are the current social, financial, and political problems in America to be blamed on those in leadership at the state and federal level? To some extent yes, as only a handful of politicians seek to please God or the people they represent in their positions. Voting for men and women who recognize “God as Supreme,” and who seek to please Him is certainly ideal and something we need to accomplish. However, 2 Chronicles 7:14 starts with, “If my people, which are called by my name…”
For many years we as Christians have simply blended in to the culture around us. We go to the same places as everyone else, we dress like everyone else, and we act like those around us. We are consumed with our jobs, sports, and recreation. All too often we wake up, whisper a silent prayer and head off to work or play. We take God with us but rarely slow down long enough to let God lead. Many Christians are so consumed with themselves that there is no time to get involved in politics, nor to inform themselves of what is happening in the political scene. A great example of that is Roosevelt’s “New Deal” in the 1930’s. The “New Deal” was a series of government programs, financial reforms, and regulations. Welfare programs, social security, unemployment benefits, and more were either started by the “New Deal,” or came about later as a result of the reforms. On paper the “New Deal” looked good, as it would help numerous individuals and families to recover from the Great Depression. History shows that very few Christians opposed it, perhaps the reason being that it took the burden off of them and churches to care for others during that time. Was it God’s plan that the government take care of the hurting and unfortunate? Absolutely not! The result of the “New Deal” was more regulation, bigger government, and higher taxes. Once again, our country is on the brink of major change by the name of socialism. We as Christians must not sit idly by this time. We need to be informed, we need to be involved, we need to vote for those who embrace Biblical principles, and we absolutely need to spend quality time fasting and praying for the upcoming election, and for God to heal our land.
“If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).
If America is ever to be healed, to return to her Godly roots, it will be the result of God’s people humbling themselves, praying, confessing and repenting of their sins and the sins of our country. It starts with you and I. What are you doing to bring about change?
