20 Things I’ve Learned in 20 Years at Mikado

Text: Philippians 3:1-7

In today’s message, Pastor Rusty Smith reflects on 20 years in ministry at Mikado Baptist Church and things that he has learned about church ministry, as Senior Pastor, of a thriving and growing church.

  1. It’s all about God.
  2. A church will only grow if it’s unified.
  3. It’s important to have the right people serve in the right places.
  4. The mission must remain the main thing – Declare, Disciple, Do.
  5. Not every person that visits Mikado will join our church.
  6. If you prioritize Biblical, expository, passionate preaching, people will grow.
  7. Godly lay leadership is critical.
  8. Do things with excellence.
  9. No matter what I do, some people will not like me.
  10. Do things right the first time, or you will do them again.
  11. A growing church is always in transition.
  12. Manageable church debt is ok.
  13. It’s ok to change some things if they are not against God’s Word.
  14. There are some battles that aren’t worth fighting.
  15. I’m not bulletproof.
  16. Micromanaging will not develop people – You must train them and then let them lead.
  17. Discipleship is hard but rewarding.
  18. People want you to love them.
  19. The right staff is critical.
  20. Mikado is one awesome church!
