God is concerned that all mankind know that He is the only true God. Recall the story of the 10 plagues God did to Pharaoh and Egypt in order to get Israel released from slavery. I believe a bigger reason the Lord did these plagues is recorded numerous times during the course of the execution of the plagues. Note Exodus 7:5, before the first plague – “And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord, when I stretch forth mine hand upon Egypt, and bring out the children of Israel from among them.” Before the tenth plague, Exodus 12:12 says – “For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord.” God designed each plague to show the weakness of the false gods Egypt was worshipping and to show His superiority over them. He loves the Egyptians, too, and desires to show Himself mighty on their behalf.
My wife and I went to the beach for a couple of days and each morning we would sit at the water’s edge to watch the sunrise. In the pre-dawn darkness of the second morning, we were approaching the beach and suddenly everything around us was illuminated. We looked and saw an extremely bright meteor breaking apart as it streaked toward the earth. It was absolutely stunning and beautiful. Moments later as we sat in the darkness on the beach, I recalled the above story of the 10 plagues. I was reminded of the verse in Psalm 19:1 – “The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handiwork.” Once again, our great Lord was simply showing His mightiness, His superiority, His desire for us to know and worship Him as the only God. Deuteronomy 7:9 – “Know therefore that the Lord thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations”. His ministry is to make Himself known to us and our ministry to Him is to learn and keep His Word. Genuine love is demonstrated by both in this way! I am glad we get to know, love, and serve the true God!
